Abstract

Drug cost is still one of the major obstacles for health care in the world. A valid option for overcoming this problem is by generic substitution. Yet, the problem of quality emerges as cheap prices are often associated with poor quality. The stability of such medications is also questionable especially if storage conditions were not provided. Many reconstituted antibiotic suspension is to be kept refrigerated in order to get the optimal benefit from the drug.

This study compared four products present in the Yemeni market containing amoxicillin and clavulanic acid in terms of quality control tests usually carried out to ensure the quality of their products. The stability of one of these products was evaluated in terms of the effect of storage conditions and type of water use.

It was found that the quality of the four products tested was comparable with superior results for the generic products over the original product. It was also confirmed that the use of tap water has a degrading effect on the stability of both ingredients, but it has more effect on the degradation of clavulanic acid. Similar results were found regarding the storage of these products in room temperature.

We conclude that there should be more emphasis on the principles of pharmacoeconomics regarding the ethical prescribing practice where generic substitution is considered for economical factors. We also recommend that products should be stored as instructed and the patients should be informed to use mineral bottled water for reconstitution of such products.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Anti-oxidant compounds are very important for inhibition of oxidative damage to biological target molecules; they are used for prevention and treatment of many diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases.

Tea from the leaves of plant Camellia sinensis has been shown to have wide range of antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anti-carcinogenic and antibacterial activity against many pathogens. In addition, Hibiscus sabdariffa (Linn) (HS) (family Malvaceae), showed benefits in the most of body health.

Objectives: this study is aimed to assess the potential protective and antibacterial activity of two famous and common plants in vitro through measuring their antibacterial activity, and in vivo through measuring kidney function tests after induction of nephrotoxicity by gentamicin.

Method: in vitro study, different species of bacteria including Gr+ve like MRSA isolated form hospitalized patients from different sources (pus and wound) and Gr-ve bacterial including (E.coli and P.aureigonsa), in addition, the efficacy of these plants were assessed in vivo through measuring kidenyl function tests including S.creatinine, S. urea, S.K+, Na+ and Ca+2 and histopathological studies.

Results: green tea was shown antimicrobial activity against MRSA compared with hibiscus that is free from that effect. Both Hibiscus and green tea-treated groups had nephroprotective effects. They improved nephrotoxicity-induced by gentamicin as they reduced the elevation in renal function enzymes.

Conclusion: from this study, we conclude that green tea is a good and potent antimicrobial agent, mainly against MRSA, so it has superiority effect than hibiscus in this manner. According to their ability to ameliorate nephrotoxicity induced by gentamicin, both plants have equal protective effects.

Abstract

Purpose: To prepare and evaluate alginate microspheres of prolonged delivery of a model drug, risperidone.

Methods: Alginate microspheres (1.5% and 3%) were prepared employing crosslinking method by calcium chloride. The formed microspheres were evaluated for percentage yield, drug content, drug loading, and encapsulation efficiency. In vitro release studies were carried out in both phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) and simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2).

Results: The formed microspheres exhibited good drug loading and encapsulation efficiency. The drug release was sustained over a period of 8 hours. There was a better release profile in phosphate buffer compared to thesimulated gastric fluid

Conclusion: The developed microspheres of risperidone exhibited prolonged drug release in phosphate buffer and simulated gastric fluid, and, therefore, could potentially improve the bioavailability of the drug as well as patient compliance. The delivery system developed can potentially serve for a delivery of many therapeutic agents.

Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating some quality control parameters to compare the quality, safety, and efficacy of nine products of albendazole tablets available in the Yemeni market. The physicochemical parameters and assay of the nine products of albendazole tablets were assessed through the evaluation of friability, hardness, disintegration, dissolution and assay of active ingredients according to established methods. The dissolution rate and disintegration time were determined in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) without enzymes. All product complied with the official specification for, friability, assay the product non complied with the official specification for disintegration are (Verben- Minister of Healthy " Mareb" Bendex -Hodidah" ibb). The disintegration test revealed that the drugs had higher disintegration with 3o min. All products none complied with the official specification for dissolution accept Alzental and zentel.

Abstract

There have been a number of reports of dietary supplements contaminated with illegal adulterants that threaten consumer’s health of their adverse pharmacological effects worldwide. In this study, our main aim was to investigate different dietary supplements of different forms present in the Yemeni market for the presence of sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil. An HPLC method was adopted for this study to investigate for their presence simultaneously. The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and aqueous solution containing ammonium acetate and formic acid using the gradient elution system at a wave length of 292 nm. All of the samples were found to contain at least one of the investigated medicines. The confirmatory studieswere performed on few selected samples by HPLC at two wavelengths of 235nm and 292nm and by thin layer chromatography method. Results obtained confirmed the presence of the investigated drugs in the dietary supplements tested.

Abstract

Objective:

Evaluation  of quality  parameter  assessing  quality ,safety and  efficacy-wise of  multi-source of Clopidogrel  formulations.

 Methodology:

Assessment of the physicochemical parameters and assay of  four different formulations of Clopidegrel along  with the smuggled form of the brand  drug.

Result:

 All products examined  have showed similar profile of weight uniformity, hardness,  friability, and disintegration, as the  original  product's. All products expressed percentage greater than hundred percentage (100%)and passed the assay test required  within the accepted  range . In a word , though more or less variations therein , an overall, there are no remarkable  differences between Original  ,smuggled and generic  forms of clopidogrel
